How much does it cost to hire a removalist in Australia?

Removalist costs in Australia vary more than most people expect, and the honest answer to "how much will this actually cost me" is always some version of "it depends" — on distance, volume, access and timing more than anything else. That said, there are consistent enough patterns across local and interstate moves to give you a realistic starting range before you collect quotes of your own.

Local moves — generally anything within the same city or a short drive away — are almost always priced by the hour rather than as a single flat figure. A standard crew of two removalists with a truck commonly charges somewhere in the region of $100 to $180 an hour, with larger crews and bigger trucks pushing that rate higher again. On top of the hourly rate, most companies also add a call-out or depot-to-depot fee — a fixed amount covering the truck's travel time from its depot to your pickup address, and back from your delivery address at the end of the job — which commonly adds somewhere between $50 and $100 depending on how far you are from the depot. For a modest one- or two-bedroom local move, all-in costs commonly land somewhere from a few hundred dollars up to around a thousand; larger homes with more furniture push well beyond that.

Interstate moves work differently. Because a truck cannot sensibly be booked by the hour for a multi-day trip across state borders, interstate removalists typically quote a fixed price based on the volume of your belongings, often estimated in cubic metres, and the distance being travelled. Rough ranges reported across the industry put a one-bedroom move from Sydney to Melbourne somewhere around $1,500 to $2,500, a three-bedroom home on the same route more like $3,500 to $6,000, and a similarly sized move to Brisbane in a broadly comparable band. Longer routes cost more — a full house move from the eastern states across to Perth can run considerably higher again, sometimes well into five figures for a large household. These figures move around a lot between companies, seasons and individual circumstances, so treat them as a rough planning range rather than a quote for your own move.

Several factors reliably push a quote up or down. Volume is the biggest one — the more cubic metres of furniture and boxes you have, the more truck space and labour time it takes, and decluttering before you get quotes is one of the few cost levers genuinely within your control. Access matters almost as much: stairs, long carry distances, narrow streets that rule out a larger vehicle, and apartment buildings requiring a lift booking with the strata manager all add complexity a removalist will price in. Timing plays a role too — weekends, month-end and school holidays are the busiest and priciest times to book, while a mid-week move can be noticeably cheaper.
